Stress and anxiety
Massage for children offers a variety of health benefits and is soothing, nurturing and relaxing. According to research, massage and touch can lower stress hormones which in turn reduces feelings of anxiety and contributes to a healthier immune system. Children’s stress can come from school, family quarrels or even within their friendship groups. Massage therapy enables the body and the mind to relax in both a safe and caring environment.
Motor/Cognitive development and special needs
Massage stimulates motor development by helping to ease the tension and pain when the body is growing and developing. It is recommended for children with Autism and Downs syndrome. Children have also been known to benefit from massage therapy if they suffer from hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders too. It also stimulates cognitive development by increasing alertness as well as speed and accuracy.
Regular massage sessions not only improve sleep quality but can help with establishing a regular sleep pattern. Massage has a generalized effect on the autonomic nervous system, resulting in changes in mood and an induced relaxation response. Insomnia is often associated with a lack of serotonin. Serotonin plays a role in mood, behaviour, body temperature, physical co-ordination, appetite and sleep. Massage can increase serotonin levels which means it is a therapeutic drug-free means of reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.
